Stewart, Robert Gordon, 1880-1941 : Robert Gordon Stewart, military officer, son of Robert Stewart, Ottawa Liberal M.P. from 1909, to 1908, was born in 1880 at Ottawa, Ont. Educated at Ottawa Collegiate Institute, he gained prominence as a contractor associated with the Dominion Dredging Company and E.O. Leahey and Company.

He enlisted in the 43rd Rifles and after successive promotions through the ranks was given a commission. He served in the South African War as a lieutenant in "D" Company, 2nd Special Service Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. Upon his return he rejoined the 43rd Regiment and rose to command the unit. Upon the outbreak of World War I, Lieutenant-Colonel Stewart raised the 38th Battalion, Ottawa, but relinquished his command to serve overseas as brigade major of the Ontario Brigade in the Second Division. During his service in England he lost the sight of one eye and was invalided back to Canada.

He died at his residence "Stoneliegh" on the Aylmer Road, Lucerne, Quebec, 14 May 1941.
