Schroeder, Allen, 1910 - : Allen Eugene Schroeder, labour leader, was born in Cananea, Sask. After spending three years teaching, he moved to St. Catharines, Ontario to work as a grocer. Schroeder joined the League for Social Reconstruction, 1932, and later became a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). Schroeder was active in organizing the CCF in the St. Catharines area and in 1937, he ran as a CCF candidate in the Ontario provincial election. In 1938, Schroeder moved to Toronto to study at the University of Toronto and was instrumental in setting up the first co-operative residence at the university. World War II interrupted his education and in 1940, he began working at a factory which manufactured parts for army trucks.

Schroeder was active in union matters and campaigned vigorously against Communist members of his local of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) in St. Catharines. In 1951, he moved to Ottawa to become UAW Legislation Representative and UAW International Representative for the Ottawa Valley. He held those positions for ten years until he was appointed Education Director for the Canadian Region of the UAW. He also served on the Canadian Labour Congress' Labour College Board of Directors until his retirement from the UAW in 1972. Schroeder was appointed Labour Counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Washington in 1972, a post he held until his final retirement in 1978.
