Collection consists of correspondence and notes concerning the earliest known settlement of Pictou, Nova Scotia between 1763 and 1773; notes and articles related to the first European settlement in Pictou, in 1767; newspaper articles, research notes and correspondence pertaining to the arrival of the first Scottish Highland immigrants to Pictou, in 1773; genealogical sketches related to the people who emigrated from Scotland to Nova Scotia in 1773 on board the Hector; rough draft of "The Pictou Highlanders: 1773", the story of the first highland immigrants to settle in Nova Scotia before the clearances, by Beer, n.d.; and family histories written by Beer's students at Malcolm Campbell High School, Montreal and John XXIII High School, Dorval.

Beer, Henry R : Henry R. Beer was born July 8, 1941 at Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Beer attended Pictou Academy, Dalhousie University and Concordia University, obtaining a Diploma of Education and a Bachelor of Arts (Canadian History). He was a teacher of Canadian studies and creative writing in Montreal area high schools. Beer was a team manager of a historical research project in Pictou, Nova Scotia and Quebec team leader on a national curriculum project for the Canadian Studies Foundation. Beer was also a freelance writer of booklets and articles on Canadian history, politics and education including: "The Pictou Plantation: 1767"; "Country Roads: Rural Pictou County"; and "Canada Could Have its Own Place in the Sun (Turks & Caicos)". Beer also researched material for "Scotland Farewell" by Donald MacKay. Supplied by Henry R. Beer.
