Fonds consists of a notebook containing fragments of an autobiographical sketch, including pages relating to Edward Hartley Dewart's family background and early years in Ireland, incidents of pioneer life in Dummer, Upper Canada, near Peterborough, an account of his education, as well as a chronology of his life at the end of the notebook. Also included in fonds are two manuscripts, "A Chapter in Boy Life, or Where There's a Will, There's a Way", regarding Dewart's education, and one untitled manuscript regarding his experiences with an Indian family as an adolescent in Dummer. The untitled manuscript, missing its first few pages, includes a one page note on the literary potential in Canadian pioneer life, two pages of autobiographical notes, and a manuscript of Dewart's poem "Ode to Imagination".

Dewart, Edward Hartley, 1828-1903 : Edward Hartley Dewart was born in Ireland and came to Dummer, Upper Canada with his parents in 1834. He was educated at the University of Toronto and ordained in the Methodist ministry in 1855. He married Dorothy Matilda Hunt in 1856 at Hamilton. He held various posts in St. Andrew's, Montreal, St. John's, Collingwood, Ingersoll, and elsewhere, before becoming editor of the Christian Guardian, Toronto, from 1869 to 1895. Dewart published a major anthology entitled SELECTIONS FROM CANADIAN POETS (1864), as well his own poems in SONGS OF LIFE (1869) and a collection of essays and verse, ESSAYS FOR THE TIMES (1898).
