Fonds consists of an Icelandic transcript for the years 1853-1901 of the diary of Jon Jonsson, and English translation of the same for the years 1873-1901. Both versions are annotated and the latter includes a preface by an unidentified author.

Jonsson, Jon, b. 1834 : Jon Jonsson was born in the Bardardal valley, Sudur-Thingyjarsysla, a district of northern Iceland, in 1834. He was the ninth of thirteen children born to Jon Jonsson and his wife Adalbjorg Davidsdottir, and one of the seven who were destined to emigrate to North America. Jon Jonsson the younger left for the United States in 1873 with his wife Sigurbjorg Stefansdottir and their two children, Helga Sigridur and Jon. Upon their arrival on this continent, they took up farming in the Dakota Territories. A record of most of Jonsson's adult life and career in Iceland and the United States has been preserved in the diary that he kept from 1853 to 1901.
