Caplin, Norman Alfred, 1904-1983 : Norman Caplin, librarian, was born in 1904 in Birmingham, England and came to Canada with his father in 1916 to join his grandparents in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan. He attended Yorkton Collegiate Institute, but returned to Birmingham to study art in 1922. After returning again to Canada, he enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan, and graduated with a B.A. in 1937, and an M.A. in 1940. He was appointed a lecturer in English at the University in 1947, and in 1953, began working as an assistant cataloguer in the University library. After a leave of absence, during which he received his B.L.S. from McGill, 1955, Caplin began his career as a librarian with the University of Saskatchewan Library, where he remained until his retirement in 1972.

Norman Caplin became friends with Leon Edel when both were students at Yorkton Collegiate, and the two corresponded over the next 25 years. Edel left Yorkton shortly after Caplin to study at McGill University, where he became associated with the poets who were later known as the Montreal Group, including A.J.M. Smith and A.M. Klein, He went on to become an internationally acclaimed literary scholar.
