Kurtenbach, John : John Kurtenbach, farmer, emigrated with his family from western Germany to South Dakota towards the end of the 19th century. Here they established themselves as well-to-do farmers. Attracted by good, relatively inexpensive land, the family left South Dakota in 1905 to settle in Leofeld, a village which formed part of the German Catholic St. Peters colony, a bloc settlement established on the Hoodoo Plains, Sask., shortly after the turn of the century.
