Parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, 1784-1796, kept by the Reverend John Doty (ca. 1745-1841), first Rector of Christ Church Anglican Parish, William Henry (formerly and afterwards, Sorel). They include entries for Fort Chambly and Fort Saint-Jean, as well as a few for Montreal, and for Schenectady and Albany in the state of New York, U.S.A. Photocopies, 53 pages.

Sorel. Quebec. Christ Church Parish. Anglican : The Anglican Parish of Sorel was the first Anglican mission in Quebec. It was formed as a result of the request for a missionary made to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (see MG 17, B 1) in 1783 by the Protestants of the seigniory of Sorel, whose numbers were greatly augmented in that year by an influx of United Empire Loyalists.

The missionary sent by the S.P.G. was the Reverend John Doty (ca. 1745-1841), who had been stationed at Schenectady, New York, until 1777, when he came to Canada as a Loyalist refugee and served as Chaplain to the British troops at Montreal. Doty arrived at Sorel (or William Henry, as it was called at that time) on 4 July 1784, and immediately began his ministry to the Protestants of the area.

For the first few weeks the congregation met in a Roman Catholic chapel and after that in a military barracks converted for its use by permission of the commanding officer of the garrison. In 1785 a bankrupt's house was purchased and served as the first church. In 1787 the Government made a grant of land to the congregation for a church and parsonage. The new church was built and opened in 1790 and pewed in 1791. John Doty remained as rector until 1803, when he resigned and went to Three Rivers as a teacher.
