The fonds contains the official correspondence and two letterbooks containing outgoing correspondence of the Department of Indian Affairs that Reed received and sent out in his capacity as Commissioner of Indian Affairs for the North West Territories. This includes letters received from senior officials of the Department of Indian Affairs, as well as prominent clergymen, North West Mounted Police Officers and other government officials. Most of the material deals with the administration of Indian Affairs during the period 1889-1893. It also includes letters of a routine nature and related to applications of jobs, requests for promotions, operation of industrial schools, welfare of aboriginal people and related matters.

The fonds also contains finding aids prepared by James Winder.

Reed, Hayter, 1849-1936 : Public Servant

Born in 1849 in l'Orignal, Canada West, Hayter Reed was educated at Upper Canada College and the Model Grammar School in Toronto. He served as a lieutenant and drill instructor with the 14th Regiment, being promoted to Adjutant, Captain and then Major. Upon his retirement from the militia in 1881, he began a career with the Department of the Interior as Indian Agent for Battleford District. He was thereafter promoted to the position of Assistant Commissioner for the North West Territories in 1884, Commissioner in 1888 and Deputy Superintendent General of Indian Affairs in 1893.

He retired from government service in 1897 and was manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway hotel chain from 1905 until 1915. He died in Montreal in 1936.

General note:

Originals and photocopies acquired in 1982 from James B. Winder of Lennoxville, Quebec. He acquired the papers from Mrs. Gordon Reed, Hayter Reed's grand-daughter-in-law, about 1961. The reproductions were made between 1961 and 1971 by James B. Winder.
