Fonds consists of correspondence and miscellaneous papers including vouchers, returns, receipts and marching state details, accumulated by Bate while serving as a supply and transport officer with the Northwest Field Force at Winnipeg in 1885, letter detailing the journey of the York and Simcoe Battalion to the Northwest, and a collection of orders, memoranda and notices which trace the history of the Governor General's Foot Guards, 1873 to 1890; personal papers, including a letter describing Winnipeg in 1882, correspondence between Bate and Captain W.E. Hodgins, G.G.F.G., letters from his father and friends and personal receipts containing letterheads from Ottawa businesses in the 1880s.

Bate, Herman Gerald, 1853-1934 : Militia officer, businessman

Gerald Bate was born at Buckingham, Que. and later moved to Ottawa. He was educated at Hellmuth College in London, Ont. and, on completion of his studies in 1870, returned to Ottawa to enter, and later become president of, his father's wholesale grocery business, H.N. Bate and Son.

Bate's military career began in 1865 when he served as a private in the Victoria Cadets. Later he served as a bugler in the local rifle company and, in 1871-1872, he was a private in the Civil Service Corps. When the Governor General's Foot Guards was organized in 1872, Bate accepted a commission and served successively as ensign, second lieutenant (1882) and captain (1887) until 1890.

Bate saw active service as a brigade major, supply and transport office, in the York and Simcoe Battalion and as brigade quartermaster of the Northwest Field Force during the Northwest Rebellion in 1885. From 1900 to 1909, he was a captain on the unattached list and then was retired to the reserve of officers with the rank of major. Bate volunteered for service during World War I but his services were declined, and in 1930 he was awarded the Officers Long Service Decoration.
