Fonds also consists of a postcard with a reproduction of a political cartoon from the Montréal Daily Witness entitled "U.S. Canada Annexation". Work by Phil Drew.

Dougall, John (family) : John Dougall, (1808-1886), born at Paisley, Scotland came to Canada as a commercial traveller in 1826. He became a merchant at Montreal, and his business was known as J. and J. Dougall and later as Dougall, Redpath and Company. In 1840, he married Elizabeth Redpath of Montreal, daughter of John Redpath and Janet MacPhee. His interest in temperance reform led him to accept the editorship of the Canadian Temperance Advocate in 1835. He founded the Montreal Witness in 1846, first as a weekly and then, in 1860, as a daily newspaper. It appealed to religious and temperance sentiment. In 1871, in New York, Dougall founded the Daily Witness, but this gave way in 1878 to the Weekly Witness. His son, James Duncan Dougall, (1843-1914), then became president of the Witness and Sabbath Reading Company of New York which continued to be published until 1920.

Another son, John Redpath Dougall (1841-1934) received his M.A. from McGill University. He published the Montreal Witness for many years. In addition to his newspaper interests, J.R. Dougall also operated the Canadian Oliver Typewriter Company and the Canadian Linotype Company. J.R. Dougall was in turn succeeded as publisher of the Montreal Witness by his nephew, Frederick Eugene Dougall (1867-1952), son of James Duncan Dougall.

Lily Dougall (1858-1923), novelist, was born in Montreal and died in England. She was the daughter of John Dougall and Elizabeth Redpath. She was educated in Brooklyn, New York and at two Scottish universities, the University of Edinburgh and the University of St. Andrew's. Although she spent much of her life in Britian, many of her novels have Canadian settings. After 1900 she turned to religious writing and her home in Cumnor, England, became a centre for religious discussion. She wrote many books including Beggars All (London, 1892), The Madonna of a Day (New York, 1895), The Practice of Christianity (London, 1913), and God's Way With Man (London, 1924).

Received in 1954 from Mrs. Temple, a daughter of F.E. Dougall.

Associated material note:

Records of Lily Dougall are also housed in the Bodleian Library, Dept. of Western Manuscripts, University of Oxford, Oxford, England. These records consist of personal letters ca. 1880 to 1920, some of which were written while she lived in Montreal. Other letters, written by Lily as a student in Aberdeen, were sent to her mother in Montreal. Includes also newspaper clippings about her career, unpublished manuscripts, biographical material and literary contracts and business papers.
