Item is an autobiography of John and Margaret Balmer, spanning the years 1819 tp 1889. The text gives an account of Balmer's experiences in the army, including descriptions of fellow soldiers, camp life, provisions, drills and other aspects of the everyday life of a soldier. Brief accounts are also given of the landscape, vegetation and customs of regions where Balmer was stationed. For British North America this includes descriptions of the port of Halifax, of the trip from Labrador by sea into Hudson Bay to York Factory and on to Fort Garry, as well as a description of conditions at Fort Garry.

Balmer, John, 1819-1898 : John Balmer, born in Hillsborough, Ireland, joined the 38th or 1st Straffordshire Regiment of Foot in Belfast in 1837. He served in the Mediterranean, the West Indies, and Nova Scotia before transferring to the Royal Canadian Regiment, which took him to St. John, Que., in 1850. In 1857 he enlisted as a volunteer to go to Fort Garry, where he stayed until 1861, before returning to St. John's. He retired from the army in 1864.
