Fonds consists of the "Autobiographical Notes of John Macdonald of Garth, a Partner in the North West Coy. 1791-1816", prefaced by a letter from John McDonald (sic) to his son de Bellefeuille Macdonald, 1 March 1859. The 103 page transcript is paginated variously and includes numerous insertions. The bulk of the text compares well with the "Autobiographical Notes of John Macdonald of Garth" (photostats, 226 pages). Both these texts may be compared with the version published by L.-R. Masson in Les Bourgeois de la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest (Quebec, 1890).

Also included in this fonds is one photograph of John Macdonald of Garth.

Macdonald of Garth, John, 1774-1860 : John Macdonald of Garth (1774?-1860), fur trader and clerk, left Scotland at an early age when his father apprenticed him as a clerk to the North West Company. He was responsible for building Rocky Mountain House and had charge of Fort des Prairies, 1806-1808, of Upper Red River, 1808-1811, and of the Columbia, 1811-1812 and 1814. He was a partner in the North West Company from 1800 and retired from active service in 1815 to live at Grey's Creek, Glengarry County, Upper Canada.

General note:

The transcript is of unknown provenance, but bears a watermark of 1890 which suggests a connection to the Masson Collection (see MG 19, C 1). The photostatic copy was prepared in 1920 from the original loaned by A.C. de Lery Macdonald of Rigaud, Québec. The photograph was received in 1962 from Garth W.K. Macdonald.
