Montreal Telegraph Company : The Montreal Telegraph Company was established in January 1847 with nine offices from Toronto to Quebec City. By 1870, its lines had been extended from Sarnia, Ont. to Sackville, N.B. In 1881, the lines of the Eastern Canadian Division were leased to the Great North-Western Telegraph Company and in 1883 the federal government took over some of the lines. The stockholders approved the sale of the Montreal Telegraph Company to CN Telegraphs in April 1954 and final payments were made to them in 1955.
