Collection consists of selected letters from and regarding Sir John Franklin, 1820-1830, microfilm reel A-1026; facsimile of a document outlining the fate of the Franklin expedition, dated 28 May 1847, with some additional notes to 25 April 1848, which was found by the M'Clintock expedition in 1859 and printed in the Illustrated London News, 1 October 1859.

Franklin, John, Sir, 1786-1847 : Sir John Franklin, born in Lincolnshire, England on 16 April 1786, entered the British Navy at the age of fourteen. He was present at the Battle of Trafalger (1805) and took part in the campaign against New Orleans in 1814. His career as an Arctic explorer began in 1818 when he was appointed to command the brig, Trent, in an expedition to discover a northwest passage, headed by Captain David Buchan. This unsuccessful attempt was followed the next year by an overland Arctic expedition lead by Franklin to explore the northern coastline of North America and to determine the latitude and longitude of the region.

A second overland expedition, this time to the mouth of the Mackenzie River, was pioneered by Franklin in 1825. Knighted in 1828, Sir John Franklin served as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) from 1836 to 1843. In 1845, at the age of fifty-nine, Franklin led his last expedition in search of the North West Island, Northwest Territories, Canada.
