Fonds consists of records of the purchase of land and fishing rights in Newfoundland from Joan Burrows, Joan Churchward, and John Aylward; power of attorney from Christopher Arthur, 1730; affidavits of John Summers and Arthur French, regarding the detention of the ship "Happy Return", 1742, and of John Gale, Peter Cutler and Alexander Findlator, regarding the seizure of "The Hampshire", 1745; and a letter from Charles Walley, St. John's 1773.

Holdsworth, Arthur, 1703-1773 : Captain Arthur Holdsworth, fishing captain, ship owner and merchant became admiral of the harbour of St. John's, Newfoundland in 1700. He held this position periodically for ten years but did not preside over any courts or meetings during his tenure. After 1711 he stopped sailing to Newfoundland regularly and managed his firm from Dartmouth, where he built a large manor house. Born in Dartmouth, Devonshire, England in 1668, Holdsworth died in 1726 while mayor of Dartmouth.
