Fonds consists of two registers of meteorological observations kept by Thomas Hutchins at York Fort, 1 August 1772 to 1 August 1773 and at Severn House 23 September 1772 to 31 July 1774, containing daily entries at regular intervals of barometric levels, temperature, wind direction and velocity, cloud density and remarks on light phenomena, snow depths, bird and animal activity. Also included with the registers are descriptions of York Fort and Severn House locations and a brief narrative on "Observations on the Effects of Colds & their Remedies", 1772, 7 pages.

Hutchins, Thomas, 1730-1789 : Thomas Hutchins, joined the Hudson's Bay Company as a surgeon at York Fort in 1776 and remained there until 1773 when he returned to England. From 1774 to 1782, as Chief Factor at Albany, he continued scienfific observations begun in 1772 with a meteorological journal at York Fort and Severn House.

In response to his work on congealing mercury by cold at Albany, Hutchins acquired minor scienfific fame and received the Copley Medal of the Royal Society in December 1783. Until his death, he held the post of Corresponding Secretary at Hudson's Bay House. His relationship with Andrew Graham from 1767 at York Factory, first as a collaborator in gathering weather data and later observing bird and animal life, culuminated in the inclusion of his natural history observations in Graham's Observations on Hudson's Bay (1791).
