Service was first provided to the Pacific (Vancouver to Asia), and then to the Atlantic, when it was launched under the title Canadian Pacific Atlantic Line. This service gained the public's favor rapidly, and it soon took over half of the mail subsidy from its main competitor, the Allan Line, which it absorbed in 1914-1915.
Two of the steamships servicing the Atlantic Line, the Empress of Britain, and the Empress of Ireland, were destined to tragic ends; the former, completed in 1906, sailed some forth years before it was destroyed in the course of World War II, and the latter, built in the same year (1906), collided with the Storstad (Norwegian collier), in 1914, and sank with two thirds of its passengers.Additional information:General note:The brochures were received from Kenneth R. MacPherson, Willowdale, Ontario.Location of originals note:The originals are held by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Line Ltd., London, England.Subject heading:Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:MG28-III23 -
