Item is a letter from G.W. Hope, under-secretary of state for war and the colonies to Charles Shirreff (fl.1837-1842) acknowledging Shirreff's argument in favor of selecting Bytown (Ottawa) as the seat of government for Canada, dated 8 December 1842.

Shirreff, Charles : Charles Shireff, a wealthy businessman, emigrated to Canada from Leith, Scotland with his family in 1818. Governor-General Lord Dalhousie gave the Shirreff family a generous land grant of 4,500 acres to develop a settlement in the Ottawa area. In 1818, Charles Shirreff settled in Fitzroy township, West Carleton, building the first home and acting as the magnet for its growth. His businesses included a flour mill, tannery, general store, wharf and numerous buildings. In addition to business interests, Charles spent a lot of time in Bytown as a collector of timber taxes for the government. A founding member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church at Kent and Wellington, he also played an important role in the Ottawa Seaway project, a plan to create an inland waterway from Ottawa to Georgian Bay that was eventually halted.
