Fonds consists of a letterbook kept by Joseph S. Arnison for his "Nova Scotia Business", from 11 March 1859 to 6 February 1865. The letters cover Arnison's dealings with both his British suppliers and with his Nova Scotia business associates and friends, including Daniel McKenzie and his brother-in-law William Harris.

Arnison, Joseph S., died 1892 : Joseph Simpson Arnison was the son of Nancy and John T. Arnison who arrived from England with their family in Pictou, N.S., between 1818 and 1820. Joseph Arnison returned to Newcastle, England, where he married Isabella Coulson Natus in 1855 and operated a brewery and an export business to a store he owned in Pictou. Documents in the collection indicate that Arnison intended to sell the store in 1865. He died in Newcastle in July 1892.
