Collection consists of biographical information, selected letters and newspaper clippings related to the life and career of Samuel Gurney Cresswell during the period 1842-1867. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1026.

The collection also contains prints with lithographed views with published narrative of the voyage of HMS Investigator in the McClure Expedition of 1850-1853, entitled: "A Series of eight sketches in colour... of the Voyage of H.M.S. Investigator" (London, 1854). Works by Samuel Gurney Cresswell.

Cresswell, S. Gurney (Samuel Gurney), 1827-1867 : Samuel Gurney Cresswell, naval officer, joined the Royal Navy in March 1842 and after several years of active service was appointed to the H.M.S. Investigator for Arctic service in search of Sir John Franklin and his companions. He served as mate on the Investigator 1848-1849; the ship returned to England in November 1849. Cresswell once again volunteered for service and rejoined the Investigator, this time as lieutenant. After a second expedition to the Arctic, Cresswell returned to England in October 1858 bearing dispatches from his captain (Sir Robert) McClure, announcing the discovery of the North West Passage.

Promoted to the rank of Captain in September 1858, Cresswell continued in His Majesty's Service after his return from the Arctic, taking part in the Russian and Chinese Wars.

During his expeditions to the Arctic, Samuel Gurney Cresswell was also responsible for preparing sketches.

Investigator (Captain McClure) During the Discovery of the North-West Passage", (London, 1854). Other examples of his work are also available.
