Thompson, John Sparrow, ca. 1795-1867 : Sir John Sparrow Thompson, journalist and editor, was the father of the Prime Minister Sir John Sparrow David Thompson, and a close friend and associate of Joseph Howe. At various times, Thompson was the editor of several Halifax newspapers including the "Acadian Telegraph", the "Nova Scotian", and the "Halifax Monthly Magazine". In addition, he took an active interest in the Halifax Mechanics' Institute and served as the first secretary when it was founded in 1831.
