From its inception the Air Transport Board maintained most of its records in a central registry, employing a block numeric subject classification system. Under this system, the records were divided into a number of subject blocks (e.g. aircraft, airports, tariffs, accidents, complaints, etc.), and each block was allotted a number. All files within the block were identified first by that block number and then by an individual file number. When the Canadian Transport Commission was established in1967, the records of the Air Transport Board were incorporated into the central registry system of the Air Transport Committee.
The processed files currently in this sub-series are in Block 1 (administration), which contains mainly general information about the Board, its structure, and its functions, Block 20 (airports), and Block 2 (licences) which contains information about Air Canada (Montreal) contracts with the Crown. Some of these deal with investigations of various charges (e.g. landing fees and gasoline prices at certain airports), while the remainder contain information and statistics on individual airports.
