Positive - paper - silverLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of letters to Irene Peterkin of Toronto from Nursing Sister Ruby G. Peterkin, who served in France and Greece during World War I, describing the living and working conditions in the medical stations, 1915-1917.
The fonds also contains photographic views of Salonika, Greece; Canadian General Hospital No. 4, Salonika; and portraits by Ruby Gordon Peterkin, C.A.M.C, 1914-1917. The photographs document the career of Ruby Gordon Peterkin as a nursing sister in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in Britain and at Salonika, in Greece. There are also three formal photographs of the graduating nursing class at Toronto General Hospital, 1911.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Peterkin, Ruby Gordon, 1887-1961 : Ruby Gordon Peterkin was born in Toronto on 1 September 1887. She graduated as a trained nurse from the Toronto General Hospital in 1911. Peterkin enlisted as a nursing sister in the Canadian Army Medical Corps (C.A.M.C.) in Toronto on 7 April 1915. She served with the No. 4 Canadian General Hospital in Britain and in Salonika, Greece. In 1917, she was invalided to England and from there back to Canada in September 1918. In 1920, she married Dr. Hugh Alexander McKay who had also served in the C.A.M.C. He worked in various psychiatric hospitals in Ontario. At the time of his death in 1935, he was Medical Superintendent of the Mimico Hospital. Ruby Gordon Peterkin died on 31 August 1961 in Georgetown, Ontario.Additional information:General note:Received in 1970 and 2008 from Mary F.
