The records include subject and correspondence files, notes on research, and a collection of related studies and publications.Additional name(s):Task Force on the Structure of Canadian IndustryBiography/Administrative history:Task Force on the Structure of Canadian Industry : The Task Force on the Structure of Canadian Industry was established on 9 March 1967 to study "the significance - both political and economic - of foreign investment in the development of our country, as well as ways to encourage greater Canadian ownership of our industrial resources while retaining a climate favourable to the inflow of foreign investment, as required, for Canada's optimum development" (Financial Times,28 August 1967). The Task Force, under the chairmanship of Melville Watkins, was composed of several other members, mainly economists: Gordon Rosenbluth, Edward Safarian, Abraham Rotstein, Stephen Hymmer, Bernard Bonin, Claude Masson and William Woodfine. In 1968, Mr. Waktins reported his findings in a report, entitled Foreign Ownership and the Structure of Canadian Industry: Report of the Task Force on the Structure of Canadian Industry, which was tabled in Parliament by Walter Gordon (tabled in the House of Commons on 15 February 1968, Sessional Paper 267, 1967-68).
The findings were based on a number of special studies and after input from several government officials and officials of foreign governments. One of the main recommendations was the establishment of a department to coordinate all policies dealing with foreign controlled companies in Canada. Walter Gordon, then President of the Privy Council, who was mainly responsible for the establishment of the Task Force, resigned from the Cabinet when he realized that the government would not commit itself to the recommendations.Additional information:Source of title:Set up by Walter Gordon, Minister without Portfolio, on 9 March 1967Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG2-C-3 -
