This line of 140.22 miles from Hawkesbury, Ontario, to Proulx Junction near the St. Maurice was completed and opened for traffic in stages between 1884 and 1901. Effective 23 June 1900 the name of the company was changed to Great Northern Railway of Canada. In 1897 the property of the Lower Laurentian Railway was acquired while in 1903 the Chateauguay and Northern Railway Company's property was leased and that of the Montfort and Gatineau Colonization Railway was purchased. In 1903 Mackenzie and Mann acquired the company and on 19 July 1906 the Great Northern Railway amalgamated with two others to form the Canadian Northern Quebec Railway Company.
