Scope and content:

A circular map showing parts of South America, South Aftica, Madagascar, New Zealand, Van Diemens land (Tasmania) and the Islands of Amsterdam and Paulo. The polar continent is delineated partly by island chains and partly by lines.

General note:

This map appears to be a later state of the map originally published by Henricus Hondius in 1641 and later reissued by Joannis Janssonius. This state of the map lacks the two cartocuhes that appeared in earlier versions. It also has New Zealnd, Van Diemens Land and the Islands of Amsterdam and Paulo and without text on the verso.
The corners of the map are filled in with vignettes of naitve scenes including a representation of a penguin.

Source of title:

Title taken from R.V. Tooley's "Early Antarctica: A glance at the beginning of cartographic representation for the South Polar Regions" which appeared in the Map Collectors' Circle.

Tooley attributed this state of the map to Frederick de Wit .

Note on the state of conservation:

Bottom border of map is missing. Map is also torn along fold line with adhesive tape applied to verso of map.

Part of the Alexander E. MacDonald Canadiana Collection purchased by the Public Archives of Canada in 1981.
