Fonds consists of letters from Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Edward Colborne Jarvis to various members of his family in Canada written while he was serving during the Afghan War, 1879-1880, and other campaigns in the Far East. There are also references to this service in the ambulance corps of the "National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded" during the Franco-Prussian War.

Jarvis, Robert Edward Colborne, b. 1842 : Robert Edward Colborne Jarvis, military officer, entered the British Army 19 July 1859 and was commissioned Ensign on 21 February 1860 after which he received the further commission as Lieutenant of the 87th Regiment of Foot (Royal Irish Fusiliers) on 8 August 1862. The 87th Regiment of Foot left Malta 18 May 1872, and arrived in Halifax 10 June, and remained there until 1 December 1876, when it embarked on the SS "Tamar" for Bermuda.
