Fonds consists of the personal correspondence of the Thompson family, Samuel Thompson's business and political correspondence, draft literary works, the personal letters of Samuel Thompson's mother's family, the Hawkins and miscellaneous articles, and clippings and genealogical material.

Thompson, Samuel, 1810-1886 (family) : Samuel Thompson (1810-1886) immigrated to Upper Canada in 1833. He edited several Toronto newspapers, 1838-1858, including the Herald, the Patriot and Daily Colonist. In 1859, he became editor of the Quebec Advertiser and government printer, 1859-1860. While in Quebec City, he produced Thompson's Mirror of Parliament, a forerunner to Hansard. Thompson returned to Toronto in 1860 to enter the insurance business, and finally became a librarian for the Toronto Free Library. He published his well-known Reminiscences of a Pioneer in 1884.
