Fonds consists of correspondence, 1816, 1820-1883, letterbooks, 1838-1868, business records, 1813-1880, railway records, 1838-1880, and subject files, 1820-1881; and Buchanan family papers relating to family, land or estate, business and political affairs of Isaac Buchanan and his family, 1697-1896. Microfilmed material includes land, family, business, political and miscellaneous papers of John Buchanan, Andrew Buchaan, Peter Buchanan, Agnes Buchanan, Isaac Buchanan, and Peter T. Buchanan, 1697-1896. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reel M-600.

The fonds also consists of portraits of Issac Buchanan and his family; drawings all by the same unidentified artist which include, amongst others, a Civil War view, soliders in battle, and a mother with a child.

In addition, the fonds contains postally-used covers addressed to Isaac Buchanan, some bearing cancelled Canadian or foreign postage stamps.

Buchanan (Family : Ontario) : Isaac Buchanan (1810-1883) and Peter Buchanan (1805-1860) were partners in a wholesale-retail business, trading under the corporate names of Buchanan and Company, Buchanan Harris and Company, Isaac Buchanan and Company and other titles, in Hamilton, London, Montreal, Glasgow and New York. Isaac Buchanan was at various times a merchant, railway promoter and a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada, 1841-1867. He was also an economic theorist and writer who advocated currency reform and protection of Canadian industry and, later, free trade and commercial union with the United States.
