The fonds also includes recordings of interviews, lectures, discussions, and recorded correspondence relating to Judith Merril, 1970-1983; interviews with various scientists conducted by Merril for her article, Food of the Future and an interview with Beverly Glenn Copeland, 1977-1978; and an interview with Merrill from the CBC radio program Morningside, [ca. 1981].

Merril, Judith, 1923-1997 : Judith Merril (née Grossman) was born in New York. She married Daniel Abraham Zissman in 1940 and had a daughter, Merril, in 1942. Divorced in 1947, Merril married science fiction writer Frederik Pohl in 1948, after becoming involved in science fiction fan circles, including the Futurians. Merril became an editor with Bantam Books and published her first and subsequently much anthologized short story, "That Only a Mother", in 1948. She and Fred Pohl had a daughter, Anne, in 1950 before divorcing in 1951. Merril edited her first anthology in 1950 and between 1950 and 1968 published another 18, including Simon and Schuster's The Year's Best S-F series. Her first novel, Shadow on the Hearth, was published in 1950 and The Tomorrow People appeared in 1963. During the 1960's she contributed a regular book review column to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

She married Daniel Sugrue in 1961; they separated in 1963. Judith Merril left the U.S. in 1967 and lived in England for a year before immigrating to Canada. She settled in Toronto where she immediately became active in Rochdale College and in supporting U.S. deserters and draft dodgers. She organized a major international science fiction conference, the Secondary Universe (Secon) IV conference, in Toronto 1971. Since then she has been active in various arts organizations such as the Writers' Union and ACTRA, has lectured and taught creative writing at a number of Canadian schools and colleges, and has participated in many seminars and conferences on science or speculative fiction, futuristics and social change.

She wrote several programmes for the CBC's radio series "Ideas", 1972-1975, and wrote and appeared on TV Ontario's introductions to the series "Dr. Who". Three collections of her short stories (written before she came to Canada) have been published since 1970: Survival Ship (Toronto 1973); and The Best of Judith Merril (New York 1976); and Daughters of Earth (Toronto 1986). A collection of her essays on science fiction was published in Japan in translation in 1972 and she edited an anthology of Canadian SF and fantasy stories, Tesseracts, in 1986. She became a Canadian citizen in 1976.
