It includes Buchanan's speeches and outgoing correspondence, material on the Ontario branch of the Liberal Party of Canada and papers concerning his cabinet responsibilities with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, Public Works, the Ministry of State for Science and Technology, and the Treasury Board (1964-1979). Judd Buchanan as Minister of Public Works and Science and Technology, and as political advisor for the Liberal Party in Ontario; Buchanan is the guest on "Question Period"; one of eight cabinet ministers in a Global News special; and the speaker at a press conference. Sound recordings are of speeches, interviews, press conferences and talks on radio programs by Judd Buchanan during his time as a member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister in the Trudeau government. Also included is a speech by Joey Smallwood. Video recordings are of television programs containing footage of Judd Buchanan as Minister of Public Works and Science and Technology, and as political advisor for the Liberal Party in Ontario. Footage includes Buchanan as the guest on Question Period; as one of eight cabinet ministers in a Global News special; and the speaker at a press conference.
Fonds consist of drawings showing the renovations to the office of the Minister of Public Works; maps of western oil and gas pipelines; arfeas leased by the oil companies in the Canadian Arctic; the Indian Reserves in the Cowichan Agency, B.C.; the proposed boundaries for Kluane National Park; and plans of the Automotive Building at the Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto.
Fonds also consists of the film BEYOND GLOOSCAP.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Buchanan, Judd, 1929- : The Hon. J. Judd Buchanan, insurance agent and Cabinet Minister, was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and received his B.A. from the University of Alberta and his M.B.A. from the University of Western Ontario. From 1966-1968 he served as a Member of the Board of Education in London, Ontario. Buchanan was first elected, in 1968, to the London West riding as a Liberal representative to the House of Commons and was re-elected in the subsequent elections of 1972, 1974, and 1979.
Buchanan held appointments as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, 1970-1972, and to the Finance Minister, 1972-1974. His appointments to the Cabinet include: Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, Aug. 1974-Sept. 1976; Minister of Public Works, Sept. 1976-Nov. 1978; Minister of State for Science and Technology, Sept. 1977-Nov. 1978, and; President of the Treasury Board, Nov. 1978-June 1979.
In February 1973 Buchanan became the Vice-Chairman of the Ontario Caucus of the National Liberal Party and gained appointment as the Regional Minister of Ontario in May 1976.Additional information:General note:These papers were presented to the National Archives in 1987 and 1989 by The Honourable J.
