Fonds consists of the following series: correspondence, 1857-1925, volumes 1-14; subject files concerning the Denison Family history, Captain Richard Lippincott, United Empire Loyalists, War of 1812 and the Rebellion of 1837-1838, volumes 15-16; miscellaneous documents, 1847-1925, volumes 17-22; diaries kept consecutively from 1850-1873 by Denison's father, G.T. Denison II, and Denison's own daily record from 1863-1923, volumes 23-30; scrapbooks dealing with the Canadian militia, Red River and North West campaigns, South African War, commercial union, Imperial Federation reciprocity, Canadian and British politics, political cartoons and reviews of Denison's books and speeches, 1859-1925, volumes 31-38; manuscripts of "Modern Calvary", "A History of Calvary", "Soldiering in Canada", "The Struggle for Imperial Unity", "Recollections of a Police Magistrate", "The Fenian Raid at Fort Erie", and speeches, volumes 39-43; Charles Mair correspondence, 1925-1936, volume 44; and Denison biography, 1928, 1947, volume 44.

Fonds also consists of photographs of Batoche, Sask.; G.T. Denison and family; events relating to the Northwest Rebellion; "Red George" Macdonell; and poet Charles Mair and his wife.

Fonds also consists of drawings Sandy Hook and Brockton Village and a wood engraving of the Uniforms of Toronto Volunteers.

Fonds also consists of a plan of part of Toronto showing lots for sale by the trustees for the Denison estate (1854) and a sketch of Batoche, Sask. (1885).

Denison, George T. (George Taylor), 1839-1925 : George Taylor Denison was born on August 31 in Toronto and educated at Upper Canada college and the University of Toronto. He was called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1861. Joining "Denison's Horse" as a cornet in 1855, he took command as Lieutenant-colonel in 1866, by which time the unit had been named the Governor General's Body Guard. Denison saw active service for brief periods during the Fenian Raids in 1866, and in the North West in 1885. G.T. Denison was an unsuccessful Independent Liberal candidate in Algoma, 1872; one of the founders of the Canada First Movement; and President of the Imperial Federation League in Canada (later the British Empire League). Denison was an immigration commissioner in London, 1872-1873, and senior Police Magistrate for Toronto from 1877 to 1923. He died at Toronto on June 6.

He was the author of a number of articles and pamphlets, including his Manual of Outpost Duties, 1866, The Fenian Raid at Fort Erie, 1866, as well as his military books, Modern Cavalry, (London: 1868), and A History of Cavalry, (London: 1877), both of which were translated into German and Russian. His other books are Soldiering in Canada, (Toronto: 1900), The Struggle for Imperial Unity (Toronto: 1909), and Recollections of a Police Magistrate (Toronto: 1921).

General note:

Most of the fonds was acquired in 1954 from Denison's daughter, Mrs. W. Langmuir, who arranged and listed their contents; a letter written by Sophia Denison in 1842 and a map of the Denison estate was acquired in 1984.
