Marquette, Jacques, 1637-1675 : Jacqes Marquette, otherwise known as Père (Father) Marquette,was a Jesuit priest, missionary and explorer. Ordained March 7, 1666, he sailed for New France where he served at Sault Ste Marie and at the mission to to the Huron and Ottawa at Chequamegon. He later founded St-Ignace Mission and opened the Illinois country to missionaries. In late 1672, he received orders from his superiour, Father Dablon, to accompany Louis Jolliet on an expedition for the Mississippi. On returning to Illinois from the journey in late 1674, Marquette opened the mission of La Conception among the Kaskaskia (an Illinois tribe). In 1675, he departed for St. Ignace, but died on route. His remains were returned to St. Ignace by Native American converts, and placed in a chapel which was destroyed in a fire in 1706. In 1877 the grave was discovered and a marker erected in 1882. He was regarded as a gifted linguist, and learned to converse fluently in six different dialects of the Huron language.
