Anne" by Steve Simon. These images taken between 1989 and 2000 document the largest annual gathering of Native peoples in Canada, who, for one weeke in July, come to Lac Ste. Anne, a lake in north-central Alberta, and transform its 40-acre shoreline into a vibrant pilgrimage site. Thousands of people visit the site and bathe in the lake, which is believed to have curative powers.
Historically, the Reverend Jean-Baptiste Thibault, an Oblate priest, named the lake for his patron, Ste. Anne de Beaupre, and the shrine became a pilgrimage destination in 1889, when rain fell following prayers. Traditionally, the Cree people call this body of water "Manito Sakahigan" or "Lake of the Spirit", and even before the arrival of Catholic missionaries to the site in 1843, it was considered a place of great spiritual significance. The modern-day pilgrimage to Lac Ste. Anne is an event in which Native peoples' spiritual traditions coexist with the Catholic faith.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Simon, Steve, 1960- : Canadian documentary photographer Steve Simon began taking photographs at age 12 in his home city of Montreal.
