Conroy including his work as a member of the executive with the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL) (1941-1951) and as the Canadian government labour attaché in Washington, D.C. (1952-1971). The fonds also documents his visit to Israel in 1949 as part of a labour delegation.
Records include correspondence, media coverage, reports, photographs and sound recordings.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Conroy, Patrick D., ca. 1900-1988 : Patrick Dominic Conroy, LL.D., labour executive, was born in Scotland, and emigrated to Canada as a youth. He worked in mines in Western Canada and the United States and became active in labour organization. He became Vice President of the United Mine Workers in 1940, Vice President of the Canadian Congress of Labour in 1941, Secretary Treasurer of that oganization in 1943, a position he held until 1951. He was head of the Canadian delegation to the World Trade Union Conference in London, 1945, and represented Canada at the World Labour Congress in Paris in 1945. He was appointed Labour Attache at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. in 1952, a position he held during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. He shared an interest in philately with his wife, Esther G. Conroy, and while they lived in Washington, they were able to attend many stamp launch ceremonies at the invitation of the United States Postal Authorities. Patrick D. Conroy retired in 1971.
