The sub-series consists of records relating to John Ralston Saul's novel, "The Next Best Thing", published first in 1986. It includes drafts, research material, correspondence, publicity and promotional material, and reviews. There are several manuscript and typescript drafts of the novel, with working titles ranging from "The Idol Worshipper", "The Savage Heart", and "The Next Best Thing", and the French version, "L' Ennemi du Bien". The drafts include annotations by Saul, his friend Emile Martel, his agents at Robin Strauss Agency, and others. His research material ranges from notes on the Shan people and clippings and articles on Thailand and Cambodia, to orchids and the drug trade in Burma. It includes several maps of southeast Asia.

Personal and professional correspondence documents publicity and promotion, editorial issues, congratulations on its publication, and reader response to the novel. His correspondents include Michael Ignatieff, Timothy Burrill, Robert Ford, Lucien Bouchard, Mary Pratt, and Yvon Paré, among others. The publicity and promotional material from Collins publishing includes a brochure by the Ottawa Book Festival, correspondence relating to the Ottawa media tour, the Toronto book tour itinerary, and dust jacket blurbs. Public reception is revealed through reviews from Canada and abroad in "Maclean's", "The Globe and Mail", "Montreal Gazette", "The Spectator" (London), "Le Nouvel Observateur" (Paris), "Le Figaro" (Paris), "Le Point" (Paris), "Le Monde" (Paris), "Vecernje Novosti" (Yugoslavia), "Esquire Kulturmagazin" (Germany), "Literatur Report" (Germany), "Publishers Weekly" (U.S.), and the "Financial Times" (U.S.), among others.
