This map depicts a portion of a single lot in the historic parish of St. John, in the Canadian Pacific Weston Shops area of present-day Winnipeg. As was typical of Métis settlements, the parish land was divided into long and narrow river lots. The map shows the "outer two miles" of this lot, a zone which was used for hay and pasture and was highly contested between the Métis and later settlers. It also shows roads and the railway, as well as a road allowance. Road allowances were stretches of crown land reserved for roads that became the sites of makeshift Métis communities as a result of the dispossession and marginalization of the Métis by settler society.

The parish of St. John's was founded in 1820 as the first Anglican parish of Red River Settlement.
