Title of the photograph in square brackets is based on information provided by Project Naming. This project brings Youth and Elders in Nunavut to work together to identify and record the names of people in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada.
The caption of this photograph states that it was taken on Cape Hope Island. However, according to members of the Weetaltuk family, there was never a log house this large on Cape Hope Island. It was more likely taken on nearby Charlton Island, James Bay where there was a Hudson Bay Company (HBC) post and where George Weetaltuk and his family lived. George Weetaltuk was seasonally employed by the HBC. When the HBC closed down its Charlton Island entrepot, Weetaltuk moved his family to Cape Hope Island. They would have moved between Charlton Island, Strutton Island and Cape Hope Island in the early years after the HBC closure, only visiting it seasonlly for hunting and gathering purposes. After this, the family spent most of the year at the principal settlement on Cape Hope Island. This information was provided by Mini Aodla Freeman, granddaughter of Geroge Weetaltuk and his third wife, Mina. Mina was born on Cape Hope Island in 1936 where she grew up. She was later recruited to serve as an interpreter at the Mountain TB Sanatorium in Hamilton, Ontario. She is the daughter of Thomas Aodla and Mala Weetaltuk (George's youngest daughter).
