(Ottawa, National Archives of Can, 1981) for further information on Martin., Watercolours and drawings recording Henry Byam Martin's sojourn in North America from September 1832 to June 1833. He landed in New York, travelled via the Hudson River and Erie Canal to Niagara Falls, then proceeded to Toronto, Kingston, Montréal, Ottawa, and Québec City. From Québec he returned to New York, and then travelled to Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Charleston, South Carolina, Alabama and then to New Orleans. He returned up the Mississippi River via Memphis, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and then embarked at New York to return to England., Many important subjects, including methods of transport, the slave trade and the Southern Secessionist Convention in 1833 are included in the watercolours. The collection also important for its depiction of costumes, particularly American and for its commentary on the American manners and customs., Originally mounted on folio 5 verso (bottom) in the Henry Byam Martin Album.
