Note regarding Cover # 1: The "Legislative Assembly, Canada" oval was the first handstruck marking to be used at the various Province of Canada Assembly seats. It made its first brief appearance early in 1849, at Montreal, this being the scarcest usage for this handstamp. When the Legislative Buildings were destroyed by fire, that same year, the Assembly, along with the hammer, moved to Toronto and remained there until 1851..
Subsequent to this, the Assembly was located at Quebec City, the handstamp being used there from 1851 until 1855. Dr. F.G. Stulberg (Toronto) in the background footnote on the history of this marking, from his study entitled: "Handstruck Legislative Markings of the Victorian Era" (1970) states that examples of this marking from the 1849 Montreal Assembly appear in green, while examples from the Toronto and Quebec City are all in blue..
R. Mitchener (Ottawa) disputes this statement claiming that the colour of the markings is blue for all three locations and that the green described by Dr. Stulberg is really a variety of blue that has been affected by either colour or paper deterioration, or both and is not a true green..
Regarding Cover # 2: The large : "Legislative Assembly, Canada" circular datestamp was the second type of handstamp used by the Province of Canada Assembly, on letters and the first of the handstruck Legislative markings to indicate the date. It was used at Toronto, when the Assembly met there, between 1855 and 1859. At that time, letters mailed by Members, while the Legislature was in session, were free of postage..
Examples of the large "Legislative Assembly, Canada" circular datestamp are found only in blue. (See: F.G. Stulberg, "Handstruck Legislative Markings of the Victorian Era", [1970]..

One paid Legislative Assembly, Canada cover, (no enclosure), addressed to: "Aux Redacteurs de l'Echo des Campagnes - Berthier en haut". The cover was mailed from Quebec City to Berthier en haut by way of William Henry (Sorel, Canada East, after 1 June 1862) and is postmark dated 1854.. The cover bears the following postal markings: struck (front) with one "Legislative Assembly-Canada" oval handstamp in blue; struck (front) with one "Quebec, L.C." double split ring circular date stamp dated "No(vember) 1(3)? -1854, in red; ratestamped (front) with one "Paid 6" straightline marking in red, (indicating a double rate prepaid domestic letter - ie 3 pence per 1/2 oz); struck (back) with one "William Henry, L.C." double split ring circular date stamp, dated "No(vember) 15-1854," in black; struck (back) with one "Berthier En Haut" double split ring receiving mark, dated "No(vember)17-1854, in blue.., One unpaid (free) legislative Assembly Canada cover, (no enclosure) addressed to: "(D.D. Bomly ?) Ecrivain, Avocat - Rue St. Vincent - Montreal." The cover was mailed from Toronto, (Canada West) to Montreal, (Canada East) and is postmark dated 1858.. The cover bears the following postal markings: struck (front) with one large "Legislative Assembly, Canada" circular date stamp, in blue, dated "May 4-1858"; struck (back) with one "Montreal, L.C. " double split ring circular date stamp, dated "May 5-1858", in black..
