Fonds comprises portraits of Mrs. Frances Brooke (1724-1789), author of "The History of Emily Montague," written in Quebec in the mid-1760s, and of her husband, the Reverend John Brooke (ca. 1709-1789), who was garrison chaplain at Quebec from 1763 to 1768. The painting of Frances Brooke has been attributed to the English painter, Catherine Read (1723-1778), whereas the authorship of the portrait of the Reverend John Brooke is less certain, although it is also possibly by Read.
