La Palme, Robert, 1908-1997 : Artiste et caricaturiste. Joseph-Anatole-Thomas-Robert Gaboriau dit La Palme est né à Montréal en 1908. Dès son enfance, il a démontré une virtuosité artistique. En 1925, après une période de sept ans sur une ferme en Alberta, sa famille est revenue à Montréal. Après avoir échoué à l'examen d'admission à l'École des beaux-arts, La Palme a travaillé à mille métiers mais a continué ses esquisses et ses caricatures inspirées par des formes géométriques. En 1933, sa série de douze caricatures de politiciens fédéraux a été publiée dans "l'Almanach de la langue française"; à partir de ce moment, l'artiste a pu vivre de sa plume. Certains périodiques new-yorkais, lui ayant offert du travail à titre de pigiste, La Palme a travaillé comme illustrateur. Dès son retour au Canada en 1937, il a développé ses talents dans les pages du quotidien Le Droit à Ottawa et, ensuite, pour Le Journal de Québec. En 1941, l'artiste a fondé la Galerie municipale de Québec dédiée à l'art contemporain.
En 1941, un projet mural de vingt tableaux sur l'histoire de la guerre lui a procuré un succès énorme à New York. L'exposition s'est poursuivie au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, à Toronto, au Brésil et, finalement, à Paris et à Rome. Pendant les années 40 et 50, La Palme a été caricaturiste aux journaux Le Canada et Le Devoir, une période considérée comme la plus prolifique de sa carrière. Il s'est présenté de plus à la télé comme journaliste, comédien et illustrateur. En 1967, on l'a nommé directeur artistique d'Expo 67 où il a fondé le pavillon de l'humour. Jean Drapeau, alors maire de Montréal, l'a encouragé à poursuivre ce concours international de la caricature. Annuellement, le Centre de la caricature a publié un catalogue illustrant tous les dessins présentés par soixante pays. Finalement, en 1984, sans l'appui financier de la ville de Montréal, le Centre a fermé ses portes.
Robert La Palme a développé un style distingué, notamment pour ses portraits cubistes, caractérisés par des lignes sinueuses, des couleurs brillantes. Comme son confrère Duncan Macpherson, La Palme a crée un Monsieur Tout-le-Monde, Baptiste, la personification d'un jeune Canadien français. Ses assauts dessinés sur les politiques de Maurice Duplessis sont sans égal. Son talent lui a mérité le prix National Newspaper Award et, en 1972, l'Ordre du Canada. Grace à ses efforts, l'art de la caricature, ainsi que ses praticiens, ont acquis une popularité inconnue au Canada. La Palme est décédé à Montréal en 1997.
