Watson Manufacturing Company : The Watson Manufacturing Company of St. Catharines was established in 1892 with James Watson as the company's first president. The company manufactured knit goods including hosiery, underwear and socks. The Penman Manufacturing Co. acquired control of the company in 1897 in order to gain access to the retail hosiery market. Mill operations were transferred to Paris, but the company remained a separate subsidiary firm. In 1911, the company name changed to the Watson Manufacturing Company of Paris Ltd. That year a branch plant was established in Brantford, Ontario, in the former Craven Cotton Mill purchased from the Dominion Cotton Company. In 1906, when the Penman Manufacturing Co. merged into Penmans Ltd., the Watson Manufacturing Co. became a de facto subsidiary of Dominion Textile. The new board was identical to that of Penmans Limited, and continued to operate as such until the company was dissolved in 1976.
