Sub-series consists of records created and maintained by the lockmaster at Black Rapids, on the Rideau Canal. These records include statements of lock dues, 1837-1878; canal orders, 1843-1872; diary of duties for lock labourers, 1848-1875; storekeeper's checklist, 1855- 1861; diaries of work performed, 1856-1871, 1899-1913; water level reports and statements, 1872- 1896, 1903-1913; names of boats and masters crossing the lock, 1882-1890, 1892-1901; books of way passes, 1903, 1931; list of equipment and tools, 1932; daily journal recording the weather and water levels, 1936-1950; and the lockmaster's journals, 1899-1929, 1935-1937.

Canada. Dept. of Transport. Lockmaster (Black Rapids, Ont.) : The lockmaster at Black Rapids on the Rideau Canal was in direct charge of the lock station and reported to the Superintending Engineer of the Rideau Canal. The lockmaster enforced canal regulations, compiled statistics, supervised labourers, and prepared journals and reports. RG43 General Inventory
