Sub-sub-series consists of entry books (bearing a variety of titles) maintained to record the text of incoming despatches received in Lower Canada, 1793-1838 (vols. 1-11, 13-18 and 27-31) and the Province of Canada, 1841-1855 (vols. 31A-38). The practice of recording the text of incoming despatches - whether numbered or unnumbered, circular, military or private - as a means of maintaining a reference copy to hand, was continued until 1855. Despatches texts found in this sub-sub-series concern a variety of subjects including land petitions, notification of the passage of Acts of the Imperial parliament, defence, military and militia matters, distribution of customs revenues, clergy reserves, land settlement, timber duties, opening of the legislature, transmission of addresses to the legislature, administration of justice, immigration taxes, the Montreal riots, Rideau Canal lands, Aborigines Protection Society, administration of the Indian Department, banking charters, the Maine boundary dispute with the United States, the post office and railroads. A list of the despatches, noting despatch numbers, dates, subjects, correspondents and page numbers is located at the beginning of each volume.

This sub-sub-series originally included additional records but subsequent rearrangement has resulted in the movement of former volumes 12, 19-21 and 23 to the Letter books of despatches to the Colonial Office sub-series.
