Godfrey, Bert, 1908-2006 : Bert and Ruth Godfrey were prominent national lay leaders of Conservative Judaism in Canada during the last century. They are recognized as the pioneers who brought Conservative Judaism to Canada. Bert Godfrey was president of Goel Tzedec Synagogue from 1948 to 1952. He played a leadership role in the amalgamation of two Toronto congregations, Beth Hamidrash Hagadol and Goel Tzedec into Beth Tzedec Synagogue, one of Canada's largest and most influential Jewish congregations. He served as Beth Tzedec's founding president from 1952 to 1955. Bert Godfrey was also founding president of the United Synagogue of America, Ontario Region and the United Synagogue Day School. Internationally, he served as United Synagogue of America national vice-president, 1957-1961 and 1965-1969. Mr. Godfrey received the Louis Marshall Award from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1961. Active in other spheres, he served on the executives of the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Jewish Public Library and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews for many years. He was the Toronto Negev Dinner honoree, Nov. 30, 1966.
