Three letters of Flora McDonell to her family of December 1917 describing the damage to the Sacred Heart Convent and other buildings in Halifax due to the Halifax explosion of 1917. She also writes concerning the Convent's care of children orphaned by the disaster and of rumours spread in Halifax after the explosion. Photocopy, 15 pages.

McDonnell, Flora, 1871-1933 : Nun

Flora McDonell was born in Chatham, Ontario in 1871, the youngest of the five children of Augustine McDonell and Margaret O'Flynn. She graduated from the Ursuline Academy in Chatham and entered the Convent of the Sacred Heart at London. After receiving her veil, she was transferred to the Sacred Heart Convent in Halifax, N.S. She taught school there for many years specializing in art. She herself was an accomplished painter.
