Fonds consists of textual records, 1947-1989, documenting the career of Esmond U. Butler as Secretary to the Governor General and Ambassador to Morocco between 1958 and 1985. The papers consist principally of personal and official correspondence and subject files, volumes 1-29. The appointment diaries date from 1955 to 1989, volumes 30-34.

Fonds also consists of photographic materials. Photographs depict Canadian scenes of buildings and scenic views, portraits of various individuals including members of the British, Dutch royal families as well as other official dignitaries and Canadian politicians. Photographs and slides related to the career of Esmond Butler are included.

Fonds also contains other graphic materials 1827-1984. Six prints include a depiction of the obverse and reverse sides of Alex Colville's design for the Governor General's medal design of Jules Léger, Governor General of Canada, 1975; portraits of Lord Lansdowne, Lord Lorne and Lord Aberdeen from Vanity Fair; portraits after drawings by Sir Leslie "Spy" Ward. Four booklets are entitled: New album of Toronto views published by Chisholm Bros., Portland Maine; New album of Montreal views published by Canada Railways News Co. Ltd, Montreal; Views of the St. Lawrence by Witteman Brothers, New York, agents for Louis Glaser's Souvenir Albums, published by G & W clarke, Montreal; and a booklet of postcards from Tadoussac, Québec. 11 postcards include views of Ottawa, Québec city, Fredericton, NB and Kentville, NS. One drawing, ca. 1883-1888, is a caricature of Sir John A. Macdonald. It also includes 1 poster (photomechanical print) of the naval assembly in Halifax for the celebration of Canada's Centennial from June 21 to 27, 1967.

Fonds also contains philatelic records, 1957-1989. 128 postal covers are various Canadian House of Commons first day of issue covers, 1969-1975; Order of Canada (10th Anniversary, 1977) commemorative covers; Governors General (25th Anniversary, 1977) first day of issue/commemorative covers. 92 postal covers, one postcard, and two stamp packs are House of Commons, Royal Trust, Canadian Bank Note Company, and Canada Post Corporation first day of issue covers; inscription block packs for Governors General and Order of Canada issues, 1977; souvenir collection, Canada Day, 1979.

Fonds contains medallic objects. 13 medals were awarded to and collected by Esmond Butler.

Fonds consists of a map of the Canadian Pacific Railway showing the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railways, the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway, and connections, indicating where sport is to be obtained.

Butler, Esmond Unwin, 1922-1990 : Mr. Esmond U. Butler, Secretary to the Governor General, ambassador, was born at Wawanesa, Manitoba and was educated at University of Toronto and the University of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1950 he was employed as a journalist with the United Press in Geneva. A year later he was hired as the Assistant Secretary General for the International Union of Official Traval Organizations. In 1953 he was employed by the Canadian civil service and worked as an Information Officer with the Department of Trade and Commerce (1953) and the Department of Health and Welfare (1954). Between 1955 and 1958 he served as the Assistant to the Secretary of the Governor General at Government House. In 1958 he was hired as the Assistant Press Secretary to the Queen at Buckingham Palace, London and was Acting Press Secretary to the Queen for the Royal Tour of 1959. He was employed as the Secretary to the Governor General in 1959 and served in that capacity until 1985. In 1985 he was appointed Canada's Ambassador to Morocco.

During his career, Butler was recognized for his service to the Canadian government. He was appointed the Secretary General of the Order of Canada (1967), and the Secretary General of the Order of Military Merit (1973). He was awarded the decoration of Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, Commander Brother and Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

Received in 1990 from Mrs. E. Butler of Ottawa, Ontario.
The photographs by Notman have the original Notman numbers 100 and 201.
The caricature of Sir John A. Macdonald was held, at different times, by Mr. Wemyss, member of Lord Lansdownes's household; Lady Wemyss; Dr. R.H. Hubbard; Mr. Esmond Butler.
