Fonds consists of two ornithological note books written while Sabine was serving on the Niagara Frontier, 1814-1815, 1 microfilm reel, A-1621; a journal of observation studies of Arctic and sea birds, 1818-1820, 1 microfilm reel, A-1621; correspondence and letterbook of Sabine regarding magnetic surveys and various meteorological observations with such correspondents as Charles J.B. Riddell, John Henry Lefroy and Charles Wright Younghusband, 1839-1859, 2 microfilm reels, A-707 and A-720.

Sabine, Edward, Sir, 1778-1883 : Sir Edward Sabine entered the British Army in 1803 as a second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, ultimately rose to the rank of General, Royal Artillery in 1870, and retired on full pay in 1877.

During the war of 1812, Sabine served on the Niagara Frontier. After 1816, he devoted himself to studies of astronomy, terrestrial magnetism and ornithology. From 1818 through 1820, he served as astronomer on two Arctic expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage. In the 1820's, he conducted a series of experiments for determining the true dimension of the earth through variations in latitudes and longitudes. During the 1830's, Sabine took part in the first systematic magnetic survey of the British Isles. This was followed by his appointment in 1840, to establish regular magnetic stations throughout the British Empire, culminating in a survey of magnetic variations over the globe.

Sabine was elected president of the Royal Society in 1861, an office he held until 1871, and continued his scientific activity until 1876.
